SUMMARY:DiscoverEE Webinar: What Are We Doing About Energy Poverty?
DESCRIPTION:Nearly 2 million Canadian households experience energy poverty. While Canada lacks a national-level energy poverty strategy\, policies and programs exist to help low-income households experiencing energy poverty. The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP)\, announced in September 2025\, is a federal initiative that aims to help Canadians cut energy bills\, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve comfort. As provinces and territories prepare to roll out their CGHAP programming\, we are taking a panoramic look across Canada’s energy poverty landscape. We will examine existing policies and programs\, identify potential gaps\, and explore solutions\, drawing insights from international strategies already in place.\n\n\n\nGuest Speakers:\nCarmelina Sorace\nProduct Management Sector Manager\, Hard-to-Reach\, BC Hydro\nCarmelina leads the Hard-to-Reach Product Management portfolio and is responsible for developing and managing equity based programs that support customers in saving energy\, reducing their electricity bills and realizing other benefits.  The programs are designed to address low income customers\, non-profits\, Indigenous communities\, and stratas and market rentals. With a strong team of dedicated program managers and specialists\, Carmelina is able to ensure that savings are meaningful and accessible to those who need them the most. \nMegan Bennett\nVice President of Program Operations\, Summerhill\nMegan Bennett is Vice President of Program Operations at Summerhill\, overseeing the delivery of energy efficiency programs for utilities and governments across Canada. With more than 15 years of experience\, Megan is recognized for driving operational excellence and scaling programs that deliver measurable energy and savings and greenhouse gas reductions. She has worked to advance energy affordability and reduce barriers to participation for underserved households\, including Indigenous communities. She is the host of Plugged In\, a climate-focused podcast that examines the human side of the energy transition\, with a focus on accessibility\, equity\, and practical solutions. In 2025\, she was the recipient of the AESP Energy Award for Individual Leadership in Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion. \n
