Benchmarking Canadian Minimum Energy Performance Standards for Appliances and Equipment
June 9, 2026

About the report

Stronger minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for appliances and equipment can help Canada significantly lower energy consumption, reducing emissions and saving utility costs.

Benchmarking Canadian Minimum Energy Performance Standards for Appliances and Equipment provides analysis and recommendations on three key categories: electric motors, lighting, and major home appliances.

Upcoming updates to Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations, particularly Amendments 19 and 20, provide a vital opportunity to strengthen this powerful yet often overlooked tool.

Key report findings

Adopting world-leading MEPS for electric motors and general service lamps in 2029 would save Canadian businesses an estimated $5.7 billion in utility costs by 2050.

The majority of major home appliances shipped in Canada are already ENERGY STAR®️ certified, suggesting stronger MEPS would be highly feasible.

Adopting world-leading efficiency standards for electric motors and lighting by 2029 could avoid cumulative emissions through 2050 equivalent to taking more than 636,000 cars off the road for a year.
