Cleantech innovations are transforming buildings, operations and workforce needs. EPICS is an exciting and cutting-edge new cleantech workforce learning platform that offers an experiential learning environment for building operators and retrofit talent pools.
Introduced as a capacity building strategy through the BOMA Enspire program and led by BOMA Canada, the EPICS pilot program is free and open to building operations staff or teams, new/mid-career retrofit professionals, skilled trades and job-seekers. EPICS offers micro-upskilling sessions in four learning streams – EBCx (Existing Building Commissioning), Retrofit Planning, Building Performance, and Skilled Trades – featuring experiential learning presented by facilitators using interactive touch-walls with pop-out multimedia, digital twin, data visualizations and VR content playing on separate screens or in a 360° format.

Kirk Johnson
Program Director, EPICS – Enspire Potential: Immersive Cleantech Studio
Kirk Johnson is Program Director for EPICS and President of Eco-Efficiency Consulting, advancing cleantech market transformation across Canada. He has led over $300M of cleantech & decarbonization programs for provincial/municipal agencies, industry associations, colleges/universities, and sustainability NGOs to scale cleantech adoption and electrification.
Kirk has developed and delivered a national building performance program,(CaGBC GREEN UP) provincial/municipal retrofit incentive programs (OPA, City of Toronto BBP), and several workforce development programs including the new Enspire Potential: Immersive Cleantech Studio (EPICS), delivering building performance and retrofit 360° experiential learning for the BOMA Canada Enspire Program. Other recent programs include University of Waterloo’s ISED-funded Career Accelerator Program and the SBC EnergySPRING program.
Kirk is an Efficiency Canada Trailblazer and has chaired Advisory Panels for ULI-Toronto, EnerQuality, and City of Toronto.
Nick Brown
President & Co-Founder, Pather Built Environment Ltd.
Nick is an experienced energy professional with over a decade in the energy conservation and building optimization industry. As a Certified Energy Manager (C.E.M.) and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (C.M.V.P.), he brings a wealth of expertise in energy audits, decarbonization strategies, and incentive program delivery across commercial, institutional, and Indigenous portfolios. Nick has led the development and implementation of high-impact sustainability initiatives, including GHG baseline creation, low-carbon retrofit planning, and advanced energy modeling for net-zero new builds.
Nick specializes in identifying actionable pathways to reduce operational carbon and improve building performance, with a strong foundation in lighting, HVAC, and enclosure systems. His work blends strategic thinking with technical execution, backed by hands-on experience across 1,200+ buildings and over $4M in secured incentive funding. A collaborative leader and educator, Nick is passionate about advancing energy literacy and creating meaningful, scalable solutions for a low-carbon future.
