Course Description:

The Demand Side Management Fundamentals workshop provides AESP members and energy professionals with a practical introduction to the key concepts, approaches, and processes used to develop successful Demand Side Management (DSM) programs.

Designed for individuals seeking a foundational understanding of DSM, this half-day workshop establishes a common understanding of DSM and its role in achieving energy savings, managing demand, improving system reliability, and supporting broader energy and environmental objectives. Based on CIET’s comprehensive two-day DSM course, the session introduces participants to the fundamentals of DSM program design, implementation, and evaluation while exploring common program types and industry practices.

Through practical examples and real-world case studies, participants will gain insight into how DSM programs are structured, delivered, and assessed across the utility and energy sectors. The workshop is designed to provide a concise, high-level overview of the DSM program lifecycle and the key considerations involved in developing effective DSM initiatives.

Key Topics

  • Understanding demand side management: energy efficiency, demand response, electrification, and non-wires alternatives.
  • DSM Measures and Program Types.
  • Fundamentals of DSM Program Design.
  • Evaluation and continuous improvement.

You’ll leave this session able to:

  • Explain the purpose and role of DSM programs.
  • Understand the differences between energy efficiency, demand response, non-wires alternatives and electrification.
  • Describe the key steps involved in DSM program design.
  • Get the most from program evaluation as a continuous improvement mechanism.

*You’ll earn 0.4 CEUs for this course by attending the full session and passing the final quiz with a score of 70% or higher.

*We want everyone to feel welcome and supported. If you need any ADA accommodations, just let us know — we’re happy to help. Email us at elearning@aesp.org.
